Biography []. Zia Inayat-Khan was born in Novato, California, in 1971, and is the first son of Sufi teachers Vilayat Inayat Khan and Murshida Taj Inayat. Vilayat made it clear to Zia at an early age that he wished him to take the mantle of his Sufi lineage as passed down from Inayat Khan, and instructed him in meditation and spiritual retreat.

Pir Vilayat. PIRZADE VILAYAT INAYAT KHAN was born in London to Pirani Ameena Begum and Hazrat Inayat Khan on June 19th, 1916. From the age of six he was raised at Fazal Manzil in Suresnes, together with his elder sister Pirzadi Noor-un-nisa and younger siblings Murshidzade Hidayat and Murshidzadi Khair-un-nisa.
Editor's Note: Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan died peacefully June 17, 2004, at his home in France surrounded by his family. His son Zia Inayat-Khan wrote to his many students and admirers: "Even as we mourn the loss of his physical presence, may we find the inner clarity and strength to remember the essence of his teaching: the soul is immortal and its very being is joy.
